This Time Bank belongs to you! It is what you make it! Every aspect of it, right down to its mission statement, is subject to the democratic decisions of all of its members. Reach out if you want to change something about how the time bank is run, or even help us with our promo video!
Timebanking is a community-owned alternative way to exchange skills and services with neighbors without any money changing hands at all. A neighbor-powered alternative currency that uses time instead of money!
Denton Time Exchange is the first and only time bank in North Texas and is an excellent way to get services you need and meet new friends! In the time bank, one hour of your time is equal to one hour of my time regardless of the skill. Check out some of the services we have on offer here and here.
HOW IT WORKS
- Emma needs a haircut. Through Denton Time Exchange, she meets Linda who is happy to cut her hair.
- Linda needs electrical work done on her house, but Emma doesn't know how to do that. But they can still exchange, because Emma gives Linda 1 hour of time credit (the time it took Linda to cut her hair) from her account.
- Now Linda can use that hour to get an hour's worth of electrical work from Jerry, a lifelong electrician.
- Jerry finally has enough hours saved up to afford that half-day cooking lesson he's been wanting to give his son for Christmas!
Even though no one spent a single dollar, five people were able to get much needed services, learn new skills, all while bringing the community closer together! It's like barter but it doesn't have to be between just two individuals. It's a whole network, and instead of "falling in the red" being something that is punished, it's an opportunity to increase one’s own giving!

Redefining Work
Some work is beyond price.
Work has to be redefined to value whatever it takes to raise healthy children, build strong
families, revitalize neighborhoods, make democracy work, advance social justice, make the
planet sustainable. That kind of work needs to be honored, recorded and rewarded.
Reciprocity
Helping works better as a two-way street.
The question: “How can I help you?” needs to change so we ask: “How can we help each
other build the world we both will live in?” Everyone gives as much as they receive.
Social Networks
We need each other.
Networks are stronger than individuals. People helping each other reweave communities
of support, strength & trust. Community is built upon sinking roots, building trust, creating
networks. Special relationships are built on commitment.
Respect
Every human being matters.
Respect underlies freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and everything we value.
Respect supplies the heart and soul of democracy. When respect is denied to anyone, we
all are injured. We must respect where people are in the moment, not where we hope they
will be at some future point.
